Have a Healthy Holiday Season

Already the holidays are upon us, and that means it's time for holiday parties, where food and drinks abound.  Every year, these get-togethers threaten  to knock us off course when it comes to healthy living.  But we don't have to let them.  Believe it or not, it's possible to enjoy yourself at holiday parties without packing on extra pounds.
What follows are some simple tips for making the holidays fun and healthy:
  • Mingle, Mingle, Mingle: Concentrate on socializing, making new acquaintances, dancing and having fun.
  • Don't arrive to the party hungry. Have a light snack such as an apple before you go. The fiber will help fill you up.
  • Want to have an appetizer? Select something nutrient-rich, like bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, roasted nuts, or steamed shrimp in cocktail sauce.
  • Choose a small plate to encourage smaller portion sizes.
  • Select no or low-calorie beverages, like water, seltzer, tea, and coffee.
  • If a full course meal is being served, don't fill up on Hors d'oeurves.
  • Do some extra physical activity on the day of the party. Exercise will reduce your appetite, and burn off calories.
  • Alcohol, wine, beer, and hard liquor pack a punch. The calories add up quickly, so consider low- calorie non-alcoholic beverages, or limit consumption.
  • Vegetables and fruits should fill over ½ your plate. Then choose a few other items to round out your meal.
If you are hosting a holiday gathering, here are some healthy planning tips:
  • Serve "hip" foods! Add a selection of fancy mustards, hummus or salsas—any unique fat-free condiments—no one will miss the old-fashioned onion dip.
  • Plain air-popped popcorn is an all-time favorite and a whole grain as well.
  • Upgrade the pasta choice. Whole-wheat pasta blends are delicious when adorned with a marinara sauce. Nobody has to know that what tastes good is also good for them.
  • Fruit decorations-have fruit chunks (mango, pineapple, melon) on a skewer with some chopped mint.
  • Serve chocolate-covered strawberries. They are easy to make and always look great on a dessert tray
